"Mardi Gras on Ice"
Lindsey Petersen
Knoxville Journal, March 1, 2008
In the midst of the eccentric outdoor activities and boundless drinking festivities of the annual International Eelpout Festival, a group of nearly fifteen men this year found the dedication and creativity to raise money for Diabetes.
Held in February on Leech lake in Walker, Minnesota, it is not your average fishing tournament. Partying is encouraged. Ice houses are recommended. Often times, people don't even fish. It is complete blasphemy, which serves as the very reason it has become so popular. People of all walks of life come from around the world to engage in what Mike Daniel, a member of the group, refers to as "Mardi Gras on Ice".
Since 1986 Mike and his old college friends (including his 4 brothers) have been traveling to Walker for the 3 day festival. Though many are now in their forties, it doesn't seem to slow them down. But by social standards, for these 3 days, they are college kids again. Their 64 square foot ice house has evolved, since they started, into one of the biggest at the festival, some 550 square feet. They refer to their site and group as "Camp Never Rest", which serves as one of the major party refuges on the frigid lake.
This past year, however, was tragically different from other years. One of their "CNR" members, Glenn Summers, died of complications from Diabetes in September. This group of friends, inspired by other charitable "camps" who attend the festival, decided to team up with the American Diabetes Association to raise money. "Our friends always rip on us because we plan this event out months in advance! So we thought we'd do something good for a change and prove to our nay-sayers that we don't just party like rock stars, we are at the festival to actually do some good, and have a good time too!" Says Daniel, modestly summarizing their mission.
In their Ice shack they housed Karaoke, sold merchandise, and raffled off Minnesota Twins, Wild, Swarm, and Timberwolves donations. When the partying had finally ceased, they were able to donate a "hefty" amount to the ADA. "We didn't quite reach our goal, but we learned a lot, and next year we will continue to help support the ADA, and hopefully help find a cure for diabetes" said Daniel. To see what they have planned for the 30th anniversary of the 2009 Eelpout Festival, check out their website at www.campneverrest.com, where they will post their plans "after rest and recovery".

DEAR CNR FRIENDS:
Camp Never Rest has long been known for its wild antics, fun times, and insanity, most notably at the annual Eelppout Festival in Walker Minnesota each year. Many would be surprised to know that CNR's start came the summer of 1986, at Lake Sassageniak in Northern Manitoba. Since that time CNR has evolved into largest network of friends, with over 100 members, (those that are official to those that are not) from Nevada to New York, from North Dakota to Texas. CNR lives by the code that "life is short, and friends are important."
Over the years we have met some great people and made some life long friends. Our group gets together periodically throughout the year, with the biggest party celebration being at the Eelpout Festival each February. We attend festivals, summer concerts, and have a spring Summit meeting each year, which rotates around the Midwest.
So, with that being said, it is our hope that you get a chance to come and meet up with us at the Eelpout Festival, or other festivals through out the year. We will be posting periodically where we will be meeting etc. Or, simply drop us a line on our Webster. We appreciate all that have stopped by, for if it wasn't for you Camp Never Rest wouldn't be what it is today! Many thanks from the boys of CNR!
Sincerely,
The King
